About

Ooooh, this is where the magic happens I get to divulge little bits of myself and talk about what type of work I write and why I write those particular things. I love reading this page on other writers’ websites. They’re so articulate and passionate. Those authors probably wore tweed coats and smoked pipes as they whipped out their brilliant artist statements. I’m in a coffee-stained sweatshirt that I stole from my husband because he’s legally obligated to loan me his clothes – it was in our vows. I promised to share my chocolate chip cookies with him. I think we can all agree that he got the better part of that deal.

I write plays and fiction. My plays tend to be dark but also have humor and pathos. I’m not talking cheap humor either. It’s not like I’ve ever had a leading lady pass gas in the middle of a meet-cute, but mostly because I’ve never written a meet-cute. I’m terrible at writing romance. I don’t even know how to flirt. When someone flirts with me, I just stare back at them in wide-eyed panic. Divulging that was so vulnerable of me. I’m very brave. But back to the main focus of this paragraph, which is going swimmingly. We’re all thinking it. “Libby is nailing this!” High-five! We’ve high-fived, now you’re a part of this. Immersive theater is so hot right now!

I keep getting distracted. My Plays: I typically write about what scares me: atomic accidents, death cults, the movie industry. My plays tend toward the highly theatrical. “Libby, that term gets bandied about so often these days. What does “highly theatrical” mean to you?” I’m glad you asked. You’re very astute, has anyone ever told you that? I bet they have. When I use the term theatrical, I mean that reality takes a backseat and I embrace the stage as a partner in storytelling. Sometimes my plays are acted out by a pile of dead bodies, or involve a cast of clowns portraying all the characters, or depend heavily on the audio design to set tone, or maybe there’s a talking dog, or perhaps there’s a character who never moves or talks throughout the whole play. Each play is its on world with its own rules.

In the realm of fiction: I used to write Young Adult novels. I’m currently stepping into the world of adult fiction. Not that kind of adult fiction. I would never write smut (again, because I’m not good at it, not for any moral reasons). My newer works tend toward contemporary and literary fiction with speculative elements. I’m currently querying two novels and am working on a third (and a fourth, and a fifth, but that’s another story).
